If you thought
Woodhead was too fast, too dangerous and too polluted... just WAIT

THE MOTTRAM TO TINTWISTLE BY PASS AND A628 ROUTE
RESTRAINT MEASURES
The Mottram - Tintwistle Bypass will be a new road of approximately
5.7km in length to bypass the villages of Mottram and Hollingworth
in Greater Manchester and Tintwistle in Derbyshire. The new road
will form part of the cross Pennine route that links the M1 at Junction
36 to the M60 Manchester outer ring road via the A616T, A628T, A57T
and the M67.
Parts of the bypass and much of the A628T are located within the
Peak National Park and much in an area designated SSSI status.
Massive increases in traffic volumes will occur, both on the main
route and other feeder routes to the A628. In an attempt to reduce
the volumes, traffic lights are planned for the Flouch roundabout
as a route restraint measure, with the intention that this will
deter drivers from using the route !!!!!
HOW WILL THIS AFFECT YOU?
INCREASED
TRAFFIC
Even with the route restraint measures, the following increases
in volume are expected immediately the bypass is opened,
57% - A628T west of the Flouch
50% - Millhouse, Thurlstone and Bridge End through to the M1 junction
37
22% - Langsett and Midhope throught to the M1 junctions 36 / 35A
It is accepted that the outlying villages of Dunford, Carlecoates
and Hazelhead will also be affected as drivers try to avoid the
traffic lights at the Flouch roundabout.
Much of this increased traffic is likely to be HGV vehicles
JOURNEY TIMES
These are likely to increase for local users as the increased traffic
will make tailbacks at Bridge End and the new Flouch Traffic lights
unavoidable.
ROAD AND PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
The A628T/A616T is already the 4th most dangerous route in the country.
The proposed scheme does nothing to improve safety so it can only
be assumed that accidents and fatalities will increase. The increased
local traffic is also likely to have a an affect on the accident
rate in all our local communities.
ENVIRONMENTAL
Increase in air pollution, run off pollution and noise are unavoidable.
The scheme is likely to produce an extra 4700 tonnes of C02 annually.
While we sympathise with the residents of Mottram, Hollingworth
and Tintwistle, we feel that the problems they currently endure
will simply be passed to the communities on the East of the Pennines.
There has been a complete lack of consultation regarding the affects
of the scheme and therefore we need your support to gain a Public
Enquiry, so our concerns can be raised.
